Turnaround Theatre presents ‘Short Plays for September’ – Upstairs at Phil Grimes Pub

This September, experience an evening of intimate, thought-provoking theatre in one of Waterford’s most atmospheric venues. Short Plays for September, produced by Helena Walsh Kiely, brings three distinctive stories to the stage upstairs at Phil Grimes Pub, Waterford, for three nights only: Friday 12., Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September 2025.

With a total running time of approximately 75 minutes, this sharply written trio of short plays promises emotional depth and moments that will stay with you long after the final scene.

Hue and Cry by Deirdre Kinahan is a searing and darkly funny two-hander in which Dublin cousins Damian and Kevin reunite at a family funeral. As past tensions rise to the surface, their encounter crackles with disillusionment and a biting sense of humour. Directed by Helena Walsh Kiely, it features Patrick Hennigan as Damian and Brendan Ahearne as Kevin.

Baby Steps by Sarah Fahy and Moira Mahony is a tender and honest exploration of love and trust. Ash and Chris have moved from Galway to Oxford in a desperate attempt to salvage their marriage and outrun the judgment of their hometown. But can distance really heal what’s already broken? Directed by Helena Walsh Kiely, this features Steven Walsh as Chris, Robyn Forristal as Ash, with Evan Sinnott, Aliscia Ryan and Taryn Nolan Lawlor as narrow minded voices from the past in this wonderful ensemble piece.

The evening ends with Where Will We Go? by Dermot Bolger, one of Fishamble’s acclaimed Tiny Plays for Ireland. In just a few powerful minutes, Bolger poses a question that echoes beyond the theatre walls: Where do we go when the show is over? This is directed by Liam Hoban and features Helena Walsh Kiely.
